Can you remember the last flood that hit Nigeria in 2012? I Know You still remember although It’s been 4 years already.  The raining season is at it’s peak, The federal government doesn’t want a repeat of 2012 flood disaster.

The Federal government of Nigeria plans to tackle flood in a different way.  Of course, With the help of Technology and  has partnered with the International Water Management Institute
(IWMI) in a joint project to create the IWMI WetLn App.

The IWMI WetLn Android app (It’s spelled as WETLN not WETIN, hope You’ve got the drift?  😉 )  Is an Android app that allows nigerians to monitor rivers and streams in the Niger-Benue river systems in Nigeria. The application provides 5-day river height forecasts at 4-5 stations using upstream-downstream forecast rating.

The IWMI WetIn App is available on Google Playstore and Citizens like You & I are urged to download it.

Speaking on the innovation, the Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Agriculture, Dr. Shehu Ahmed, said “Nigeria sought the help of the international agency to develop the application following the devastating flood of 2012 which led to huge destruction of farms, houses and human lives.”

Nigeria is turning that bitter 2012 experience into a blessing by looking at various ways farmers and government could take advantage of the technology.

In his remarks, the Regional
Director for Africa at the
International Water Management Institute (IWMI), Professor Timothy
Olalekan Williams, said — that the IWMI WetIn  application was developed using data from the Nigerian Hydrological Service Agency, the Nigerian Meteorological Agency and available satellite data.

It’s a really nice initiative by the Federal government to combat Flood disasters especially in Riverine areas but “In Falz’s Words: There are more important issues which should be of utmost priority.
