August 12, 2014[INTERVIEW] NDLink interviews Mr. Borve Paago on the USAID funded LEAD project in the Niger Delta
August 14, 2014For centuries, the people of Umuagu Autonomous Community in Umuahia North Local Government Area of Abia State have been going to neighbouring towns for their health needs.
But last year, succour came their way as the European Union, MPP9, donated a health centre to them through an NGO and the activities of some their prominent sons and daughters.
The ceremony for the official hand over of the ultra-modern health centre was performed recently at the construction site, near Orie-Umuagu Market square by Edom Construction Company.
The community leaders, elders as well as the youths of Umuagu witnessed the ceremony.
Speaking before the handover of the project to the beneficiaries, a representative of the company said that the Umuagu project was one of the first to be completed among the various projects they are handling in communities in the state.
He urged members of the community to make effective use of the facility to justify the purpose for which it was donated to them.
Responding, the Chairman of the committee that supervised the project, Chief Chukwudi Nkemakolam reiterated the need for the facility and thanked everybody who in one way or the other made the realization of that project a reality.
He also thanked MPP9, AGAPE, an NGO that attracted the project to the community as well as the state and Federal Government, the host community and members of the committee for their roles in realizing the noble dream.
He called on Umuahia North Local Government authorities to take over the health centre and equip it with modern health facilities, drugs as well as employ health personnel.
He commended Engr. Ama Ezeoma; Prof Smart Uchgbu; former President General of Umuagia Autonomous Community, Chief Onyenonachi Iroagba; the traditional Prime Minister of Umuagia Autonomous Community, Chief Emma Nwagbara; the President General of the community, Chief Benson Onyekachi Aguwa and many others for making the project successful.
He charged members of the community to shun bickering and emulate the good deeds of those mentioned to move the community forward.
Speaking, the President General , Chief Aguwa thanked MPP6 for putting smiles on the faces of the Umuagu people by building the health facility, which he said has been lacking for centuries.
“With what we have here today, our people, particularly women will no longer go to other communities for their ante-natal and delivery and parents need not go to Umuahia for normal health needs of their children unless on special cases,†he said as he prayed God to reward all who made the project possible.
