April 26, 2024“Plastic Pollution is a Development Issue”
Plastics have brought numerous benefits to modern life but have also resulted in widespread environmental damage, biodiversity loss, and threats to human health. Addressing plastic pollution requires interventions at every stage of the plastic lifecycle to increase circularity and prevent leakages. However, there are significant challenges along the plastic value chain hindering necessary changes.
“Pathways out of Plastic Pollution”
This report highlights the importance of coherent policy instruments to prevent plastic pollution and transition towards circularity. Key principles for policymakers include tailored strategies, combining policy instruments, and considering the true cost of plastics and alternatives to society.
“Filling Knowledge and Methodology Gaps”
Insights from models like the Plastics Policy Simulator and Plastic Substitution Tradeoff Estimator provide evidence-based approaches to policy-making. These models aim to inform target setting and decision-making processes, supporting countries in their efforts to end plastic pollution.
The World Bank Group’s approach includes three key transitions: stopping leakages, increasing circularity, and restoring ecosystems for sustainable development.
