Hand washing with soap can reduce the incidence of diarrhoeal disease and acute respiratory infections in children by 50%. October 15 is Global Handwashing Day. Bacteria from faecal matter is a big contributor to the spread of disease. Washing hands with soap breaks the chain of contamination. Critical times for hand washing with soap are before preparing or eating food, after changing or cleaning a child, and after defecation. A tippy tap can be built quickly and easily using local materials. Putting your foot on the bottom pole causes the jug to tip forward so a small stream of water comes out. When empty, simply refill the jug with clean water. For more information see www.tippytap.org . Even where there is no power or running water, a tippy tap allows for improved health by providing an inexpensive, effective hand washing station.
