The Media hub of the Foundation for Partnership Initiatives in the Niger Delta (PIND) recently conducted a training on photography and videography for the Participatory Partnerships For Community Development (PPCD).
PPCD is an initiative of Chevron Nigeria Limited (CNL), the operator of the NNPC/Chevron Joint Venture. It was established to build the capacity of the Regional Development Committees (RDCs) to enable them effectively implement the Global Memorandum of Understanding (GMoU), a tripartite agreement on community development which CNL entered into with the communities and state governments in the areas where it does business in the Niger Delta region of Nigeria.
The objectives of the training were to build the skill of PPCD staff and her partners to be able to take well framed, exposed and composed pictures, improve the quality of pictures taken to improve their internal and external communication as well as introduce easier ways of editing and sharing pictures.
16 persons participated in the four –day training which included 6 women and 10 men. A Pre-test was conducted before the training with an average score of 28%. After the training a post test was conducted and the average score was 70%. In summary, there was a 42% increase in knowledge of the participants at the end of the training.
At the end of the training, participants’ evaluation showed that the training was very useful for the work they do.  They shared the improvement in the quality of pictures they captured and are developing their skills on how to use simple editing software they were trained on.
Betram Mayuku the M&E Manager of PPCD said ‘’ I must confess this training came at the right time. Before now, the pictures we take were not professional for the kind of work we do, but now, we take time to analyse our pictures and we have a better understanding of how professional pictures should look like.  Now that our capacities have been increased, we plan to improve on the quality of the quality of our reporting using pictures and videos’’
PIND also plans to do a basic training social media for PPCD on how new media techniques can be used to improve the quality of work they do.
