May 5, 2015The National Universities Commission (NUC) has issued a letter of recognition to Ondo State University of Medical Sciences, making it the 40th state university and 139th university in the country.
While presenting the letter of recognition to the Ondo State governor, Olusegun Mimiko, the NUC Executive Secretary, Professor Julius Okojie, commended the governor for his vision to establish the nation’s first University of Medical Sciences stating that the commission would send a team to assess the level of resource at the university before it commences admission of students. He further said that the NUC would also write the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) to include the new university on the list of universities candidates who seek university admission can apply to.
“I wish to congratulate the government of Ondo State for the establishment of Ondo State University of Medical Sciences. With effect from April 22, 2015, the Ondo State University of Medical Sciences has been recognised by the National Universities Commission as the 40th state university and 139th university in Nigeriaâ€, Okojie said.
Speaking shortly after he received the letter of recognition, Mimiko said the university was established based on the desire of the state government to have a specialised university that is dedicated to training for service delivery and research. He disclosed that the Nigerian Post Graduate University of Surgeon has already accredited the University for Post Graduate training, based on the facilities it has on ground.
“Our goal is not to produce one of the best Nigerian universities, we want a university of global record and we are getting to that. We were driven by the passion for excellence in medical services in Nigeria and we thought that we needed a specialised university dedicated entirely to training for service delivery and research. We also want an institution that will be a medical tourism destination where we can give first class quality service to every Nigerian and beyondâ€.
Mimiko said the university has taken off already with the letter of recognition from NUC, adding, “We have gotten the letter, we have a Vice Chancellor and we hope to take off before the end of the yearâ€.
