Work has resumed on the the 3.65 kilometre Okrika-Borokiri Road with three bridges connecting Kolabi, Abotoru and Okpoka creeks to Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital. The road is being constructed by the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC).

Addressing newsmen, the Acting Managing Director of NDDC, Mrs. Ibim Semenitari, while on inspection on the site said the contractor had been given all necessary assistance to ensure that the project was not stalled again. She stated that many other projects that were stalled had similarly been revived after her previous inspection visits and interactions with the contractors, pointing out that the commission invited the contractors to meetings where commitments were made by all parties towards ensuring that the sites were active once again.

Semitari listed the revived projects which are  the Ogbia-Nembe road in Bayelsa State, being undertaken in partnership with the Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC), which is almost 100 per cent completed, connecting 14 communities, including Nembe, as well as the Koko-Oghoye road in Delta State, which would terminate in Escravos, the Iko-Atabrikang-Enwang-Okoroutip-Iwuochang road, which opens up the several oil-producing communities in Akwa Ibom State, the Umunteke Junction-Obegu-Ihie road in Abia State, the Ayetoro Shore-protection in Ondo State and the 522 bed-space prototype hostel at the University of Port Harcourt in Rivers State.

In her words ‘’ this is a project that is indeed top priority because it connects several communities to the Rivers State capital. It is one of the projects that can take traffic off Aba Road and East West Road. You will find people living in Okrika, Akpajo, Eleme or even Gokana and Khana commuting to Port Harcourt through the road.” The road when completed would reduce traffic congestion on the refinery road as well as reduce travel time from Okrika to Port Harcourt.
