Despite the frequent cloud cover in the Niger Delta, technology has progressed so that solar power is a viable option for reliable energy. Despite the abundance of oil and gas in the Niger Delta, the power grid does not extend to all communities. Electrical power is intermittent and often expensive. While efforts are being made to address these challenges, some communities are opting for alternative energy sources that allow them independence from the grid. The capital cost of solar panels can still be daunting but once installed, the energy produced is free and unlimited. No more blackouts, and no back-up generator required. Solar power is of interest to communities and businesses that are off the grid and must now rely on generators and purchased fuel for power
