November 22, 2024According to global statistics, only 26 percent of technology-related jobs are held by women, with a mere three percent representation for Black or African women. Advocates have flagged this as a significant concern, emphasizing the urgent need for change.
In a bold move to bridge this gender gap in technology especially in the Niger Delta Region, Her Tech Trail, an empowerment initiative, has equipped young women with valuable tech skills.
Convener of the event Gloria Ojukwu,, stated that Her Tech Trail is committed to addressing these disparities. “Our mission is to increase the representation of Black women in tech by providing them with mentorship and support throughout their career journeys,” Ojukwu said.
The program, dubbed Tech Her Fest ‘24, spotlighted the importance of fostering diversity and inclusion within the tech space. “Empowering women from underrepresented communities is crucial for creating equitable opportunities in this field,” Ojukwu added.
Speaking at the event, Data Analyst Tina Okonkwo encouraged women aspiring to enter the tech sector to actively seek mentorship and feedback. “Visibility is key to growth in this industry,” she remarked. Another panellist, Faith Benibo, highlighted the potential of such initiatives to help Black women achieve financial independence and pursue successful careers in technology.
The training, held in Port Harcourt, brought together participants from secondary schools, higher institutions, recent graduates, NYSC members, entrepreneurs, and media professionals across five states. Through engaging discussions and hands-on workshops, the event aimed to inspire more women to explore opportunities in the tech industry.
The event featured panel discussions, interactive training sessions, and networking opportunities designed to equip attendees with the tools needed to excel in the tech industry. It also served as a rallying call for more initiatives that champion diversity, equity, and inclusion in the technology sector.
Participants expressed gratitude for the knowledge shared, noting that the experience had positively shaped their career aspirations.
