March 14, 2024Rivers State Rivers State Governor, Sir Siminalayi Fubara, has promised increased investment in the state’s cassava processing factory, located in Oyigbo Local Government Area, to bolster productivity and enhance food sufficiency and security.
During a recent visit to the factory to assess its progress, Governor Fubara assured the management team of additional financial support to complete two more production lines. These expansions will amplify the factory’s capacity, enabling it to meet the growing demand for cassava-based products and supply them to various distributors.
Governor Fubara underscored the significance of the factory in promoting agricultural development and reducing the state’s reliance on oil revenue. He commended the effectiveness of the existing production line and emphasized the importance of ensuring that the factory operates at international standards.
Established by the administration of former Governor Nyesom Wike in partnership with Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC), Vieux Manioc BV of the Netherlands, and the Embassy of The Netherlands in Nigeria, the Rivers Cassava Processing Company Limited represents a significant agricultural investment in the region.
Nigeria, being the largest cassava producer globally, benefits greatly from this initiative, as it addresses the gap between domestic demand and supply. The factory’s establishment not only contributes to food security but also creates opportunities for small and medium-scale farmers in the Niger Delta region.
Moreover, the Rivers State Government’s decision to hold only a 10 percent stake in the company reflects a strategic approach to ensure the sustainability and efficiency of operations. By fostering partnerships with private entities, the government aims to maximize the factory’s potential while empowering local farmers and promoting economic growth in the region.
Overall, the commitment to the expansion of the cassava processing factory underscores the government’s dedication to agricultural development and economic diversification in Rivers State and beyond.
