Founded in 2004, Stakeholders Democracy Network works with and supports many local partner organisations and communities in the Niger Delta on issues such as oil spill response and compensation, mediating inter-communal conflicts, addressing local energy needs, promoting good governance through budget transparency and accountability in service delivery, resource governance and environmental sustainability.

SDN’s mission is to support the efforts of those affected by extractive industries and weak governance through rights based community empowerment. It works to protect human rights and demand responsive governance. SDN’s model of engagement is inclusive, engaged, open and constructive. They bring diverse and opposing stakeholders together to build lasting bridges and workable solutions based on local knowledge from those who know best how to deal with the issues they face.

SDN has also developed a community empowerment model premised on research that suggests communities that are knowledgeable, confident, cohesive, inclusive, and organised can become agents of change. The organization uses a rights-based approach to empower communities with the tools they need to become active agents of change so that they become key partners in their own development.

Service Delivery Education

SDN’s work is based on research with a specific focus on data gathering, data visualization, GIS Mapping, needs assessments and system development. Data is used in evidenced based advocacy to support communities to influence government policy.

The organization has been notably instrumental in building issue-based   coalitions such as the National Coalition on Gas Flaring and Oil Spills in the Niger Delta (NACGOND) and the Niger Delta Anti-Corruption network (NIDAN). SDN believes that the challenges within the Niger Delta can be effectively resolved through partnerships and collaborations with various stakeholders including the Federal and State governments.

SDN focuses on five main spotlight issues; Resource Governance, Democratisation, Environment, Resilient Communities and Access to Energy.

SDN is currently based in Port Harcourt, Rivers State with an International Secretariat in London.
