The peace and security landscape in the Niger Delta remains highly dynamic. The situation deteriorated slightly in the first quarter (Q1) of 2026 compared to the fourth quarter (Q4) of 2025. Data indicate a 30.3% increase in lethal violence, with conflict-related fatalities rising from 76 in Q4 2025 to 99 in Q1 2026 (see page 2 for details). According to PIND’s P4P Peace Map, the main drivers of lethal violence during the period included criminal activities (particularly kidnapping for ransom), cult gang clashes, mob justice, communal conflicts, armed clashes between hoodlums and security forces, separatist agitation, violent protests, human rights abuses by vigilantes and state security actors, domestic violence, and natural disasters.
