Niger Delta Prepares to Host $10 Billion Blue Economy Investment Summit
December 15, 2025In an effort to enhance environmental accountability and equip residents with practical monitoring tools, the Health of Mother Earth Foundation (HOMEF) recently concluded a capacity-building workshop for communities across the Niger Delta. Participants came from Cross River, Akwa Ibom, Rivers, Bayelsa, and Delta states, with a focus on oil-producing areas.
The training emphasized the importance of credible data in supporting advocacy and legal claims against environmental violations. Resource persons, including Mr. Onyekachi Okoro, Executive Director of the Media Awareness and Justice Initiative, demonstrated the use of digital tools and smartphones for monitoring air, water, and soil quality. Key features such as geotagging and location settings were highlighted as ways to capture verifiable and widely accepted evidence.
Chief Environmentalist Lagos Morris also shared guidance on collecting factual and accurate information while engaging respectfully with community members. Participants were encouraged to avoid exaggeration and to focus on reliable data that can withstand scrutiny in litigation and advocacy efforts.
By the end of the workshop, participants expressed renewed commitment to protecting their environment and improving accountability mechanisms within their communities. The initiative reflects ongoing efforts to empower residents with the knowledge and tools to document environmental impacts and support sustainable development across the Niger Delta.
