February 6, 2024The Minister of Niger Delta Development Engr. Abukakar Momoh , is calling for the adoption and introduction of renewable energy, for the provision of electricity in remote areas of the Niger Delta region to improve the quality of life and enhance development in the region.
In a meeting with some officials of SAF-AGA, a solar hybrid mini-grid solar power partner, in Abuja, the Minister, commended the alternative energy company for its efforts in the region, explained that the adoption of clean or renewable energy to remote areas in the Niger Delta region will help improve the living standard of the people in all ramifications.
He stated that solar energy generated from solar-powered systems, is clean energy, cleaner than gas, and adopting solar-powered energy means adapting to global best practices and moving away from fossil energy, which consumes a lot of resources in building and operating a transmission station
He assured that the Ministry will soon key into alternative energy sources, to see that most of the communities that are not connected to the national grid also have access to power through the solar-powered system.
Meanwhile, the managing director of SAF-AGA Renewable Energy Limited, Godbless Safugha, had earlier explained that the aim is to develop mini-grids in communities that do not have access to power grids. Noting that they have started with four communities in Delta State, as two mini-grids are being constructed each in the Bomadi and Burutu local government areas in Delta State, which would be to expand later.
He said the four grids would empower 2,500 households, one of which is connected to 350 households, and they hope to expand to 595 households in the Niger Delta.
