May 31, 2024The Honourable Minister of Environment, Balarabe Abbas Lawal, presided over the 10th Meeting of the Governing Council (GC) of the Hydrocarbon Pollution Remediation Project (HYPREP) on Wednesday 22nd May 2024 in Abuja. The Council deliberated on critical matters about the HYPREP mandate. The Honourable Minister, in his remark, restated the commitment of the Council to transparency and accountability in the implementation of the Ogoni cleanup. He also underscored the importance of community support and ownership of the project.
The Project Coordinator, Prof. Nenibarini Zabbey provided a comprehensive update on the work progress in the projects’ thematic areas.
After that, the Hon Minister of Environment led other GC members to unveil three HYPREP reports for public use on sustainable mangrove management. The reports are:
(1) Ogoniland and the Niger Delta: Mangrove Restoration and Conservation Strategy
(2) Mangroves in the Niger Delta: Restoration Manual, and
(3) Niger Delta Mangrove Restoration: Brief Field Guide.
The reports are co-authored by Prof. Nenibarini Zabbey and UNEP’s senior consultant, Emeritus Prof. Olof Linden. The reports provide a sustainable master plan on how to manage the mangrove ecosystem to combat climate change in the Niger Delta and Nigeria extensively.
This will provide a baseline guide to other efforts to curb climate change globally.
