NDLink, the Niger Delta’s leading development media platform, is equipping young people with the tools to reshape global narratives about their region through open knowledge platforms. In partnership with Wikimedia Niger Delta and with support from the Foundation for Partnership Initiatives in the Niger Delta (PIND), on August 20, 2025, NDLink hosted a one-day workshop themed: “Empowering Niger Delta Youth through Wikipedia.”
The training brought together 57 participants (30 onsite, 27 online) who gained practical skills in digital storytelling, Wikipedia editing, and knowledge sharing.
Building Skills, Shifting Narratives
Opening the workshop, Ms. Mary Joseph, NDLink Coordinator, emphasized that storytelling is more than documentation – it is about ownership.
“When young people tell their own stories on global platforms like Wikipedia, they challenge stereotypes, amplify resilience, and ensure the Niger Delta is represented with authenticity and pride,” she said.
Facilitators from Wikimedia Niger Delta guided participants through practical sessions introducing the Wikimedia Foundation, its projects, and the principles of Wikipedia editing. A session on Storytelling for Change exposed participants to how narratives and photography can serve as powerful tools for advocacy and transformation.
Mr. Jeremiah, Lead Facilitator from Wikimedia Niger Delta, reinforced this by noting, “Wikipedia thrives on neutrality, credibility, and collective participation. By equipping Niger Delta youth with these skills, we are not just training editors, we are empowering changemakers who can tell their communities’ stories with accuracy and impact.”
The highlight of the day was a live edit-a-thon, where participants created and improved Wikipedia entries for NDLink, PIND, and the workshop itself, while also contributing photo projects to Wikimedia Commons. These contributions expanded the region’s online presence and ensured the workshop became part of the global open knowledge ecosystem.
Deepening Youth Engagement in Open Knowledge In addition to building technical skills, the workshop provided a platform for exchange between development practitioners and young changemakers, highlighting the pivotal role of youth in reshaping and owning the narratives of the Niger Delta.
Certificates of participation were awarded to all 30 onsite and 27 online participants, affirming their successful completion of the training. More importantly, the certificates served as a call to action, urging participants to actively apply their knowledge as contributors to open knowledge platforms and as storytellers committed to amplifying the voices and resilience of the Niger Delta.
Key Outcomes and Strategic Takeaways

Looking Ahead
The workshop went beyond training; it inspired a movement of youth determined to own and share their stories. NDLink and partners plan to:
