February 17, 2014Several communities in the Niger Delta, including Ogwuashi Uku, Ibusa, Ubulu Uku clans, have reason to celebrate soon. These communities and others have been without electricity for over 4 years. The erratic power supply in Asaba District of the former Power Holding Company (PHCN) will soon be a thing of the past, as the gigantic power project in Delta State, overseen by Niger-Delta Integrated Power Project (NIPP), will be completed in April.
According to Odinakachukwu Amobi, project manager of AK-AY Elektrick Limited, economic activities in the area is set to pick up soon as the step down from the national grid is completed in April. “We are at the peak of the work, at least 90% of it has been completed, with the auto transformer here, be rest assured that Asaba and its environs will have regular power supply.â€
Amobi told reporters that the project site containing the power sub-station will be a new hub for Asaba, adding that with six feeders, power would be extended to other parts of the state. If the need arises, power could also be extended to neighboring states, as other power distribution companies have expressed confidence in the project.
