May 9, 2024SUMMARY
The Environmental Performance Index assesses yearly emissions from oil-producing companies in the Niger Delta, Nigeria’s oil and gas-rich region. In 2020, Nigeria, which was one of the world’s top oil producers, showed the highest ratio of emissions to production, indicating a significant impact on the environment. This report by SDN aims to mitigate the negative effects of the oil and gas industry by providing vital information on its environmental performance in the Niger Delta, fostering constructive dialogue for policy solutions, and ensuring the ensuring the fair distribution of benefits, ultimately aiding Nigeria’s transition to clean energy.
Key findings from the analysis reveal a reduction in oil and gas industry pollution in 2020, albeit with a decrease in production and spill documentation by regulators, potentially underestimating environmental degradation. Despite lower volumes of oil spills and incidents, over 17,000 barrels of oil were spilled across 409 separate incidents, mainly in Rivers State. Gas flaring decreased, yet remains a substantial contributor to greenhouse gas emissions, equivalent to 18% of Nigeria’s CO2 emissions.
International oil companies (IOCs) and the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) were responsible for the highest emissions, with domestic oil companies (DOCs) showing higher emissions per barrel produced, notably in marginal fields. A few companies contributed to the majority of spills and flares, with Consolidated Oil ranking as the best environmental performer and Shell as the worst.
Compared to global averages, Nigerian oil and gas companies exhibited significantly higher spill and flare rates per barrel produced. Discrepancies among data sources highlight the need for greater transparency from both the government and industry. Detailed production figures and emissions reporting are essential for informed decision-making and public advocacy for effective policies and responses.
