May 9, 2024The Akwa Ibom State Governor, Pastor Umo Eno, has approved the Independent Electoral Commission Law Cap 69 Bill recently passed by the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly into law. The Governor signed the new bill on May 7, 2024, at his office in Uyo.
The amended Independent Electoral Commission Law is set to update the electoral laws in the state, fostering efficiency in the electoral process at the grassroots level. It provides legal backing and aligns the activities of the Akwa Ibom State Independent Electoral Commission (AKISIEC) for the smooth conduct of local government elections. Additionally, the law aims to boost confidence in the electoral process in the state.
AKISIEC is also expected to come up with a program of action that will culminate in the conduct of local government elections in the state.
In a related development, the Chairman of the Akwa Ibom State Independent Electoral Commission (AKISIEC), Elder Aniedi-Abasi Ikoiwak, has expressed hope that the legal framework signed by the Governor will empower the Commission to conduct a successful local government election in the state.
The Chairman also said that now that the law has been signed, the responsibility falls upon the Commission to devise a program for the upcoming local government elections.
He expressed gratitude to the Governor for assenting to the AKISIEC amendment bill and commended the State House of Assembly for passing the bill into law.
