April 20, 2023Niger Delta Weekly Conflict Update: April 30 – May 06, 2023
May 5, 2023
This weekly update spotlights the growing threat of mob violence and extrajudicial killings in the Niger Delta. According to data (see map above), mob violence caused more than 400 fatalities in the Niger Delta between January 2020 and December 2022. Recent incidents indicate the growing prevalence of mob violence and extrajudicial killings in the region, mainly driven by a rise in criminality and perceived weaknesses in the penal system. In January 2023, for instance, a robber was reportedly lynched by a mob in Agbarho community in Ughelli North LGA, Delta State. In April, a mob reportedly killed a 35-year-old taxi driver for killing two persons in an accident in Akure, the Ondo State capital. In another incident, a robbery suspect was reportedly killed by a mob in Aka Uffot community in Uyo, the Akwa Ibom State capital. More recently, on April 19, 2023, a mob reportedly killed a commercial tricyclist for allegedly killing a passenger during a fight in Yenizue-Epie community in Yenagoa LGA, Bayelsa State.
