Food preparation is central to family life. What if there are equally effective cooking option that didn’t involve harmful smoke and less fuel? The Global Alliance for Clean Cookstoves, a public/private partnership to address this issue, states that smoke from cooking on traditional stoves and open fires, causes 2 million premature deaths annually, primarily women and children. yet over 3 million people continue to use traditional cookstoves. According to the Alliance ”…toxic cookstove smoke contributes to a range of chronic illnesses and acute health impacts such as pneumonia, bronchitis, cataracts, lung cancer, cardiovascular disease, low birth weight and burns. the World Health Organization estimates that harmful cookstove smoke is the fifth leading cause of death in developing countries.”.  Clean, efficient cookstoves are available and affordable, reduce pressure on natural resources and are less arduous and dangerous for women and children.
