To further its quest for increased infrastructural development in the Niger Delta Region, the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) has inaugurated projects to stimulate the economy of Abia State.
The latest projects include the 13.7km Akwete-Umuagbai-Ndoki road linking Abia and Rivers States, the 3km Umuadienwe-Obahu-Umuturu road and the 1km Umuoforji-Okomini-Obehie road.Others are the 20,000 gallon capacity water scheme in Asa, Ukwa-west Local Government Area and donation of science equipment to 13 Primary Schools, 18 Secondary Schools and 4 Tertiary Institutions.
Inaugurating the projects, NDDC Managing Director, Dr. Christian Oboh, disclosed that the Commission was committed to completing its projects across the region as well as initiate those of economic importance.
â€œWe are more than ever ready to ensure the rapid, even and sustainable development of the region with infrastructure that will link the communities, enhanced growth and create jobs for the youthsâ€ Dr. Oboh who was represented by the Abia State representative on the Board of NDDC, Aloysius Nwagboso declared.
To ensure maximum benefits from the Commissionâ€™s gesture, the Managing Director in line with the present Boardâ€™s quest challenged communities on the need to own and maintain projects in their domain.
While thanking the Government and people of Abia State for their co-operation with the contractors during the construction period, Dr. Oboh assured that the Board will strive to complete the Commissionâ€™s projects in the state.
Responding on behalf of the people, a traditional ruler in Ukwa-west, Eze Chinyere Dike who praised the Commission for embarking on people oriented programmes, pledged continued support for the NDDC to achieve set goals.
On his part, the Commanding Officer 144 Battalion of the Nigerian Army, Lt. Col. Tonye Minima thanked NDDC for its effort at ensuring the development of the region and assured of sustained peace in the area.
